Application of CFD for Turbomachinery Flow Analysis

LearnCAxGanesh Visavale, co-founder and general manager at LearnCAx and one of our UberCloud community members discusses computational fluid dynamics in rotating machinery such as compressors, turbines, fans, pumps, blowers, and mixing tanks. He presents the complex CFD design cycle, the modelling approach, and mesh generation and quality. In the last part of his presentation he illustrates this process with the example of a centrifugal blower and compares the Single Reference Frame (SRF) with the Multiple Reference Frame results. A Cost Model for In-House Versus In-Cloud Technical Computing

Engineers and scientists today have three major options to apply technical computing resources to their design and development work: their workstation, an in-house server, or compute power in the cloud. In this article, benefits and challenges for these three options are discussed, and a detailed cost model for three different scenarios is presented: buying an in-house server, or adding extra compute power from the cloud, on demand, or using a hybrid model consisting of a smaller in-house system (covering the average daily load), and using cloud cycles for peak demands.

Turbomachines: old challenges, new solutions

Desktop Engineering’s Kenneth Wong wrote this excellent article about engineering simulations in the cloud. He touches on repackaging software for the cloud; getting cost down from CAPEX to OPEX; going mobile; talking about some of the major hurdles, bandwidth and security. And he finishes with an interesting observation:  For small and mid-sized engineering and design firms, the low-cost public cloud offers tantalizing possibilities. It’s a way for them to bypass the need to purchase and maintain hardware that they may not use perpetually. If their aim is to use the cloud for data storage and backup, the setup is relatively simple; however, if they plan to use the cloud as an on-demand computing resource, it’s not so straightforward. The emergence of companies like Rescale, OCC and 10th Magnitude indicates small and mid-sized engineering businesses will have an easier time reaping the benefit of the public cloud through third-party companies that have developed solutions tailor-made to tackle their problems. Solving Complex Combustion Challenges – From Air-Fuel Mixing to Pollutant Emissions

fluids-techtip8-industrial-furnace-power-generation-smMany industrial applications incorporate combustion processes: from gas turbine and coal combustion for power generation to reformers that generate fuel for fuel cells; from household heating furnaces to incineration plants that burn waste. The challenges for engineers designing combustion systems are multiple and varied: Stable combustion must be ensured; Temperature distribution must be controlled to eliminate degradation while ensuring high efficiency; Pollutant emissions must meet regulations, which become more stringent every year. In this article, ANSYS presents several interesting examples, such as combustion and flame dynamics on experimental DLR combustor;  flame flashback phenomena in DoE-NETL SimVal combustion chamber as hydrogen replaces methane as the main fuel; large-eddy simulation in DLR combustion chamber; and Combustion in industrial furnace for power generation; which you can see here.

If you missed this webinar, you can now access the video and the slides as well as the related article published on ANSYS Advantage magazine. In this video, Team 8 members of the UberCloud CAE Experiment discuss the benefits, challenges, and lessons learned of bringing the end-user’s engineering application to the compute cloud. During their experiment the team worked jointly on a real CFD application – a Flash Dryer Simulation with Hot Gas Used to Evaporate Water from a Solid. Team 8 members are: End-user Sam Zakrzewski from FLSmith; Software provider Wim Slagter from ANSYS; Resource provider Marc Levrier from Bull/Serviware; and Expertise provider Ingo Seipp from Science + Computing. The development of prosthetic feet using carbon fiber composite materials has paved the way for many amputees to resume an active and athletic life-style. In this webinar from May 20 Kim Parnell, Principal at Parnell Engineering & Consulting, and Srinivas Reddy, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at MSC Software, focused on nonlinear simulation using MSC Marc to help understand and design for the severe loads and environment that some users expect their composite limbs to survive. Failure modes such as delamination and fatigue are investigated. Testing with Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is used to provide additional insight and to aid in correlation with simulation.
