CloudFlow published second wave of engineering cloud experiments

TREK Bicycle: Containerizing Engineering Simulation for Faster CFD

However, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of bicycles, Trek, utilizes Univa’s Grid Engine – Container Edition and UberCloud Software Containers to assist with their modeling. Trek’s engineers regularly perform a large number of computational fluid dynamics simulations to design their aerodynamic bikes. Trek recently incorporated containers to increase efficiency of their workflow and believe it has been a “game changer” for their R&D teams. Tony Abbey, NAFEMS: Stress in Finite Element Analysis: Parts 1 & 2

Figure-2-x-direction-stress-Tony Abbey teaches live NAFEMS FEA classes in the U.S., Europe and Asia. He also teaches NAFEMS e-learning classes globally. Tony recently published parts 1 and 2 of a thorrough diacussion about stress in FEA. In part one of this series, he looked at the fundamentals of forces and stresses, and in part two he looked at how to use these stresses in a practical example. Tony discusses the following topics: stress definition, understanding forces, the force and stress cube, stresses follow forces, and the art of load paths. In part two the example structure is shown in the figure on the left. It is a cross brace, supported at the left-hand edge by two lugs and loaded at the right-hand edge through two lugs. It is sitting in the global XY plane.Tony discusses the stress distribution and local coordinate systems.

Novel Abaqus software container announced at SIMULIA / Dassault Systèmes Conference in Boston

Team 1Frank Ding from Simpson Strong-Tie and Wolfgang Gentzsch from UberCloud announced the novel software container for the Abaqus software at the SIMULIA / Dassault conference in Boston May 23 – 25. Frank and Wolfgang presented a live demonstration of the Abaqus container running in the cloud for a heavy-duty structural analysis, a mechanical anchor pullout capacity analysis, for predicting failure mode and concrete cracking pattern. This same cloud experiment took three months in 2012 (as UberCloud Experiment #1), and with the novel Abaqus software container it took less than three days, just a few weeks ago. The novel software containers are easily packageable with any engineering software, portable from workstation to server to any cloud, easy to access and use, and scalable from one to many cores. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft might be going to war to win Uber cloud business

UberCloud computing vendors are in a heated race to win ever-larger businesses. While the Amazon Web Services started off as a niche service for small developers and startups, it’s turned into a $7 billion industry force. Microsoft and IBM have the edge that they already work with big business. And Google Cloud Platform has made a redoubled effort to build out their enterprise platform. If nothing else, with Uber’s massive scale, it would be a huge PR win for Microsoft, Amazon, Google, or whoever wins this deal. Their salespeople could point at Uber and show what’s possible, especially since the startup has become such a household name. Availability of STAR-CCM+ on Microsoft Azure

STAR scaling on AzureIn his recent BLOG Tejas Karmarkar from the Microsoft Azure team announced the availability of STAR-CCM+, a multidisciplinary engineering simulation solution from CD-adapco, now a Siemens Business. The Azure team has been working with CD-adapco to deliver high level of scalability and performance with STAR-CCM+ because of its dedicated high speed low latency network fabric that uses RDMA and Infiniband technology, available only on A8 and A9 instances.
