Chevron Partners with Microsoft to Fuel Digital Transformation from the Reservoir to the Retail Pump

ChevronChevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) today announced a seven-year partnership with Microsoft Corp. establishing the company as Chevron’s primary cloud provider, accelerating the application of advanced technologies including analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) to drive performance and improve efficiencies. “We embrace every opportunity that streamlines our workflows, gives us insights into more efficient operations and helps us compete,” said Joe Geagea, Chevron’s executive vice president of Technology, Projects and Services. “We already have a head start in digitizing our oilfields, but we want to accelerate our deployment of new technologies that position us to increase our revenues, lower our costs, and improve the safety and reliability of our operations.” The Microsoft strategic partnership is part of Chevron’s overall digitization initiative, a multi-year effort to streamline information technology (IT) operations around a digital core connecting the company’s engineers and operations through nimble analytics and increased automation. Adoption of Microsoft’s Azure platform will allow Chevron’s IT workforce to evolve from supporting infrastructure to one that enables more advanced technologies, as well as optimize exploration, reservoir management, production operations, midstream logistics and marketing operations. Cray and Microsoft bring supercomputing to the Cloud

CrayCray has announced an exclusive strategic alliance with Microsoft to offer dedicated Cray supercomputing systems in Microsoft Azure datacentres. This partnership will enable customers to run AI, advanced analytics, and modelling and simulation workloads at unprecedented scale while connected to the Azure cloud. With this new partnership, Cray and Microsoft have made it easier for cloud customers to harness the power of supercomputing and multiply their problem-solving potential. Cray and Microsoft will also bring these advantages to a new set of customers who were previously unable to purchase or maintain an on-premise Cray system. “Our partnership with Microsoft will introduce Cray supercomputers to a whole new class of customers that need the most advanced computing resources to expand their problem-solving capabilities, but want this new capability available to them in the cloud,” said Peter Ungaro, president and CEO of Cray. AWS and Azure revenues soar, and why supercomputing could be the next big opportunity in the cloud

Short answer is: very fast: “Amazon Web Services crosses $1B in operating profit as revenue jumps 42 percent to $4.6B” and “Microsoft hits its $20 billion commercial cloud revenue run-rate goal ahead of schedule“, reports GeekWire. The author is also looking into predicting where future revenue will come from, especially in areas that aren’t mentioned every day. Yes, server-less, cloud-native and AI workloads will certainly be money-makers in the coming years. But so will a lot of workloads that previously spent their lives inside banks, national labs and even some three-letter agencies. For example, Microsoft and Cray announced a partnership wherein supercomputer users will be able to host Cray systems inside Azure data centers. Dassault Systèmes’ Living Heart Now Available in the Cloud – Project Reaches Next Milestones in Mission to Improve Patient Care

Quindine1For the first time, the Living Heart was used to simulate detailed drug interactions affecting the entire organ function. Researchers at Stanford University working with UberCloud, SIMULIA, Advania, and HPE recently used the Living Heart as a platform for a model that would enable pharmaceutical companies to test drugs for the risk of inducing cardiac arrhythmias, the leading negative side effect preventing FDA approval. “The Living Heart Project is a strategic part of a broader effort by Dassault Systèmes to leverage its advanced simulation applications to push the boundaries of science,” said Jean Colombel, Vice President Life Sciences, Dassault Systèmes.  “By creating both a community and a transformational platform we are beginning to see the advances from the Living Heart Project being used for additional aspects of cardiovascular research as well as for other parts of the body, for example the brain, the spine, the foot, and the eye, to reach new frontiers in patient care.” Read Dassault’s announcement HERE.

Accenture survey finds Cloud and HPC among the trends having the greatest potential to transform the businesses of oil companies in the next 3 – 5 years

Oil1As per the Accenture and Microsoft 2017 Upstream Oil and Gas Digital Trends Survey, when asked to identify the top ways digital benefits their companies, 30% said faster and better decision-making, faster time to produce oil and gas, came in second place with 19%, and reduced risk enabled by real-time decision support was the third most important with 12%. The global survey showed the upstream areas most expected to benefit today from digital are production with 28%, geological and geophysical 27%, and drilling and completion with 19%. Almost two-thirds of more than 300 professionals surveyed, or 62% perceive business value from digital technologies, with 27% totalling it at $50 million to $100 million or more for their companies.
