HPC Clouds Can Compete with On-Premise HPC Clusters, New Benchmarks Show . . .

Exabyt.io_.Cloud-Study.2. . . And Microsoft Azure Cloud is taking the lead. This is the result of comparative HPC benchmarking of cloud computing vendors with High Performance Linpack, performed by Mohammad Mohammadi and Timur Bazhirov from Exabyte Inc. The authors present a performance analysis achieved by the Linpack benchmark on compute intensive hardware from cloud providers Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, IBM SoftLayer, and Rackspace, compared with the traditional NERSC Edison supercomputer. The study analyzes performance within a single compute node and speedup for distributed memory calculations with up to 32 nodes on at least 512 computing cores. The study’s findings demonstrate that the concept of HC in the cloud is ready for widespread adoption and can provide a viable and cost-efficient alternative to capital-intensive on-premises hardware deployments.
